International product design company, IDC (Industrial Design Consultancy), has committed to helping students considering a career in product design. They are doing this in a number of ways. Last week members of the team gave a talk to sixth-formers at Eton College, and over the next few weeks, the company will have several students join them for week-long product design taster placements. As well as this, the company also has at least one full time university placement student at any one time.
Placement student, Peter Hiles, will be heading back to Brunel University shortly after a whole year at IDC. He commented, “I have had a great year at IDC and would advise anyone looking for a career in product design to seriously consider a placement at IDC. It has been a great way to develop skills and this role in particular will set me up for the projects I will face in my final year at Brunel.”
IDC’s Industrial Designer, Nick Chubb, and Design Engineer, Andrew Carson, were invited to deliver a talk to current students at Eton College who are considering design as a suitable career path. The talks included a spectrum of information about studying design and its choice as a launch pad for other careers too.
IDC’s Andrew Carson explains, “You can take a range of different academic routes and work within the same industry, but that’s what makes everyone unique, covering a permutation of skills collaborating with engineers, industrial designers and product designers.”
Eton College’s Oliver Cooper, Master in the Design Schools, said, “It was extremely beneficial for the students to hear from two young, experienced designers and their varied careers paths resulting in working at an experienced consultancy which has been running for over 40 years”.
