New Look for Specac Spectrometers

IDC recently put its award-winning design skills to the test when developing a new spectrometer accessory for Specac. The product is an Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR) accessory which fits to FTIR spectrometers to analyse solids, liquids, pastes and gels through infrared.

IDC redeveloped the product for design savvy mid-priced procurement; bringing enhanced technology in combination with sophisticated styling which moved away from the product’s industrial look. The challenge was to develop these design qualities while meeting a market driven price point.

IDC worked with Specac from concept right through to prototype production. At the concept stage, IDC assessed ergonomic user interfaces such as control knobs, ease of replacement of the crystal plate, access for screws and general portability; which would all contribute to the overall user-friendliness of the product. Different approaches for manufacturing construction and materials were also explored to ensure the best combination of design and cost of production. IDC produced several 2D and 3D CAD concepts which were then brought to life by IDC Models as SLA prototypes for Specac to show to their potential customers.

Barry Knight, IDC’s project manager, commented “We are delighted to have produced another product for Specac. Once again, we worked hand-in-hand with Specac engineers to make sure we went beyond their expectations and the product feedback so far has been excellent.”
