IDC’s Stephen Knowles gives insight into Medical Device Design

Medical Device Technology online approached Stephen to get his opinion on what the first step should be when launching a medical product successfully into the market.

IDC’S experience in working within the medical sector is vast having been at the forefront of new innovative medical technology for the last 20 years. IDC have previously won the prestigious Red Dot Design Award 2011 for their design of Venner’s Laryngoscope, and the IDEA award 2008 for Wockhardt’s Insulin Pen Injector which showcases the medical design talent at IDC.

Stephen recommends that the first step is to identify the risks and potential difficulties by completing a detailed risk review starting with the user and market needs. The developer should ask themselves:

  • "Does the device solve a significant patient and/or health system need?"
  • "Is it possible to develop new functions and overcome patents?"
  • "Will the device get approval?"
  • "What will the final device and the development process cost?"

The development programme should therefore focus on answering questions which pose the biggest risk. IDC can help aid your organisation with this development having helped numerous medical companies to successfully enter the market.
