Using clever design, IDC was able to produce an ergonomic hip hinge to control hip movement following surgery, replicating the real rotational movement of a hip joint.
Contextual Research
IDC created a world leading support device for hip replacements. It is ergonomic, attractive and compact; providing patients with essential post operation support and movement control.
The real rotational movement of a hip joint was replicated in the product, for reliable stability and comfort.
After hip replacement surgery, the average patient takes up to six weeks to recover 80% of movement.
In order to prevent stressing the wound site whilst still being able to have basic mobility, IDC developed the Calverline Hip Joint Support Brace.
Concept Development
Shape Exploration
IDC developed a combined hinge and rotational device using a swivel link arm component. The main structural components of the device are made up of stainless steel investment castings.
The link arm swivel joints allow for adjustment during recovery. IDC designed and detailed all components including injection moulded ABS covers and Tuflex trims.
The combined materials provide a compact strong lightweight device with a pleasing aesthetic and complying with all relevant standards
