Close collaboration for
world-beating results

Working with Specac’s precision optical engineers, IDC created a cutting edge and reduced cost design without compromising performance. The Quest ATR’s combination of precision, value and user appeal have made it the industry’s best seller.

IDC was commissioned by Specac to undertake the industrial design development for their Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR) accessory.

An ATR is a spectrometer used to analyze solids, liquids, pastes and gels through infra-red wave length.

Specac came to IDC to enhance its product identity and draw in a larger demand through its price point, sophisticated functionality and appealing product styling.

They also wanted this new product to have a strong appeal to university scientists and mid-price orientated procurement.

IDC worked with Specac from concept through to prototype production. Different manufacturing construction was explored during the conceptual stage to achieve a high level aesthetic design at a low cost.

Ergonomic user interfaces were also considered at the concept stage such as; access for screws, portability and ease of replacement of the silver plate. These helped to achieve an overall user-friendly product.

Finally, various 2D and 3D CAD concepts were created before an SLA prototype was delivered to Specac to show their potential customers.

Overall IDC was able to create an intuitive aesthetic design for the ATR product which has broken away from the current conventional industrial look, creating a new and sophisticated look for Specac.

IDC worked closely with Specac’s engineers who were very satisfied with the final product.
