Reusing pallets offers big economic and environmental benefits but with continued reuse, pallets can degrade over time. The CHEP pallet tester, designed and built by IDC allows used pallets to be tested to ensure they are safe and fit for service.
Commissioning
GKN commissioned IDC to develop a pallet tester to simulate the typical impact side loads during use, responding to returns caused by accidental side impacts by forks from lift trucks.
From scratch, a reliable test unit was designed and prototyped using pneumatics, load cells, impact buffers and electronic controls.

The equipment successfully delivered the required loads at its prescribed rate enabling GKN to iterate, optimize and release an enhanced version of the Chep pallet.
Easily recognized by its blue colour, the Chep pallet was developed by GKN to withstand significant static and impact loads assuring long usage life.
IDC’s Chep pallet tester was a success and Chep pallets are now routinely tested so they can be safely reused.
