New formats for
environmental chamber
Utilising elements from existing product lines, IDC created a new flexible format, making the chamber usable in many configurations. By integrating the design and interface with the complex engineering challenges posed, an elegant solution was proposed.
Front or Top Opening
Planer came to IDC with the technology to develop an environmental chamber, but were keen to have experienced industrial designers work on the appearance and configuration of the product.
IDC was briefed to develop concepts which took a modular approach, so it was possible to use the device with either top opening or front opening doors. The idea being that each unit used the same technology but the doors could be easily configured to suit different lab environments. Each unit would be built to order by Planer and the doors fitted ready for customers.
This presented challenges for IDC in designing for such a low temperature device. Cable positioning was also a focus area as the cables needed to be carefully located to suit both door configurations.
3D CAD Design
IDC Models then went on to produce prototypes of the device to evaluate the design.
The final product proved a great success in environmental control down to exceptionally low temperatures.
