IDC Offers Safe Seating for Prisoners

With the Government investing heavily in new accommodation for prisoners, IDC (Industrial Design Consultancy) has developed a safer seat for prison cells. The chairs are suicide and vandal resistant, fire retardant, and are cost-effective to produce. In addition, they are designed to be difficult to hold or throw to prevent them being used as a weapon. Thousands of these chairs have already been installed by HM Prison Service in cells across the country and are now available to order from IDC.

Prisoner suicide is a major problem for the prison service and high-risk prisoners are housed in special cells. With this in mind, IDC’s prison chair was designed to be a safer choice with smooth surfaces and ligature points, to protect against suicide and vandalism. IDC’s knowledge of materials and processes enabled the team to select materials that would withstand impact and abrasive attack, while conforming to the strict standards for fire, smoke and toxicity.

The chair was designed to be ergonomic and extremely cost effective; as a simple chair moulded from 5mm thick fire retardant MDPE plastic. With high specification tooling and moulds at the ready, IDC is able to produce prison chairs to order for prison refurbishment contractors. Each chair measures 817mm high x 544mm wide x 526mm deep.
